The US Civil War Battle of Gettysburg was clearly an enormous undertaking from a command and control point of view. Union General Meade had to coordinate his artillery, infantry and cavalry over a large battlefield with over 86,000 troops. In order to handle this three day battle required a large headquarters staff. As many as 3,500 soldiers were dedicated to the task of managing the Army of the Potomac.
