Well, on one of the first trips back there was no sign of the 15 men they had left there, and there was only a skeleton left behind.

In terms of the "Lost Colony" there were two clues. One was the word "CROATOAN" carved into the post of a fence, and CRO carved into a nearby tree.

John White thought this may have been an indication that they moved to Croatoan Island, but was unable to visit there to check.

What would Roanoke be remembered as?

Roanoke will always be remembered as a great mystery to those who know the story behind the island.

Year of the first permanent English settlement in the New World?

Sir Walter Raleigh left behind an expedition of men on Roanoke Island, off the coast of Virginia on 17 August 1585 with the sole purpose of establishing a colony. When John White returned on 22 July 1587, they found the site deserted. White left the 150 colonists he had brought with him to reestablish the colony. On 18 August that year, White daughter Eleanore gave birth to the first English-American, Virginia Dare. White left later that year, leaving behind 115 colonist, including his granddaughter. He was unable to return for three years. There was no sign of the people he left behind, and he discovered the word "Croatoan," the name of a nearby island and tribe, carved into the post of the fort of the colony. While Roanoke was not a lasting attempt, it was the first (intended) permanent English settlement in the New World. Jamestown in 1607 fared a bit better.

The Roanoke Island Colony mysteriously disappeared. John White, the governor of the Roanoke Island colony, returned from a supply trip to England to find the colony deserted. Why did the colonist of Roanoke disappear?

The exact reason for the disappearance of the colonists of Roanoke is unknown. They were the second group of colonists to settle on Roanoke Island, and when the resupply ship arrived in 1590, the colony was found abandoned with no trace of the settlers. The only clue left behind was the word "Croatoan" carved on a tree, suggesting that they may have joined the nearby Croatoan Native American tribe.

What is the Mystery of the first Americans?

The first Americans were the natives that lived on this land when the europeans landed. Are you talking about the colonists at Roanoke? http://www.nationalcenter.org/ColonyofRoanoke.HTML "This Colony was run by Ralph Lane after Sir Richard Grenville, who had transported the colonists to Virginia, returned to Britain for supplies. These colonists were ill-prepared and not particularly clever, because, although they depended upon the local Indians for food, they also antagonized the Indians by such tactics as kidnapping them and holding them hostage in exchange for information. Unfortunately for the colonists, who were desperately in need of supplies, Grenville's return was delayed. As a result, when Sir Francis Drake put in at Roanoke after destroying the Spanish colony of St. Augustine, the entire colony returned with Drake to England. "Interestingly, when Drake picked up these colonists, he left behind 15 of his own men, who were never heard from again. This foreshadowed one of the great mysteries of North America, Roanoke's so-called "Lost Colony" of 90 men, 17 women and 9 children, founded in 1587 and discovered to be missing in 1590, but for the word "Croatan" carved on a post. Although both the English and the Spanish searched for clues to the colony's disappearance for many years, the mystery has never been solved."
