Miranda v. Arizona, (1966) was the name of the US Supreme Court case. The original case was State of Arizona v. Ernesto Miranda, tried in Maricopa Superior Court in June 1963. Miranda was found guilty of kidnapping and rape and sentenced to 20-30 years in prison. His attorney appealed on the grounds that his confession should not have been admitted into evidence because his Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination had been violated.
