The first Battle of Bull Run resulted in a Southern victory and the realization that the Northern troops needed much more training and discipline, and that it was going to be a much longer war that most people predicted. Although the length remained uncertain.

It also led President Lincoln to summon General George B. McClellan to Washington DC.

The Union army would rapidly improve under General George B. McClellan. It would be the premier army of the Union and be called the Army of the Potomac.

The result of the Confederate victory in the First Battle of Bull Run was the South's recognition that the use of interior lines was a perfect tactic for the South to use to win the battle. For the first time in the US Civil War, Confederate troops under General Joseph Johnston were able to link up to the forces of General PT Bearuregard and form a concentration against Union General McDowel's army at Manassas. This would not have been possible if Union General Patterson had not retreated as he was north of Johnstone's force that then began the railroad link to meet Beauregard's army at Mananssas. The victory gave the South a boast in morale and shocked the North. During the battle the famous "Rebel Yell" was created during one of the South's charges at the enemy.
