World War Two officially started with Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939. The Axis was made up of Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler, fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini, and the Japanese Empire under Emperor Hirohito. The Allies were comprised of the U.S. Great Britain, and later the Soviet Union. At first, the Axis did well, with Hitler quickly overrunning mainland Europe, and Japan extending its influence in the Pacific Ocean. Eventually however, the Allies gained the advantage, especially after the failed German invasion of the Soviet Union, which began in 1941, and the Japanese defeat at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942. Germany was finally defeated when Soviet forces took Berlin in May 2, 1945, and Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945, after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, respectively.
The former Axis powers were reintegrated back into the world order. Germany was divided by the Allies, with the Soviet Union controlling East Germany and the U.S., Great Britain, and France controlling West Germany. Western Europe was rebuilt under the American-led Marshall Plan, and Japan was occupied and aided by the U.S. until 1951.
