General Sheridan and 10,000 troopers of the Union cavalry were sent on May 9, 1864 by General Grant on a raid against Richmond.
He was intercepted by General J.E.B. Stuart's Confederate Cavalry force at Yellow Tavern. Stuart had divided his forces into two detachments of which his own engaged Sheridan frontally and the other, led by Gen. James Gordon was in the rear of the Unionists.
Due to the great inferiority of Confederate force (4,500 against 10,000) the Southerners were compelled to break contact and withdraw.
General Stuart and James Gordon were both killed during the fighting.
