The Union lost again, but General John Pope withdrew his army in good order. Confederate General Lee established himself as a capable field commander. The defeat in basically the same place as the first Bull Run was an embarrassing defeat as well.

In the first Battle of Bull Run, the Confederates Won. The Confederate General, Stonewall Jackson became immortal. The Yankees Lost. General Polk was removed from command of the Union Forces. General McClellan was put in charge of the Union Forces.

The battle was a tactical victory for the Confederacy. Neither side won a strategic victory. Eventually the Confederates retreated south. A better general than McClellan would have attacked the retreating Confederates.

The results or perhaps better said the aftermath of the battle saw this:* General Pope lost his command of the Army of the Potomac;

* General Pope was relegated to serve in the Minnesota Territory for the rest of the war;

* The battle lifted the prestige of General Robert E. Lee;

* Confederate casualties amounted to 9,000 troops;

* Union casualties amounted to 16,000 and

Since the Confederates had about 48,000 troops and the Union had 72,000 troops, General Pope suffered losses proportionately as well as absolutely,higher than Lee's.
