Easily. Volcanoes can kill in three ways. Obviously, if you are touched by the molten lava, it will injure or kill you. The volcanic ash can suffocate or bury you, such as happened at Pompeii in Italy, 2000 years ago. But the sulfuric fumes of a volcano can be quick poisons themselves. In 1904, Mt Pelee in Martinique erupted, and killed over 28,000 people. Also in 1883, Mount Krakatoa erupted. The death toll was unclear (measured over 36,000, but also over 120,000)
It was the deadliest tornado in history with a death toll of over 1300.

A death toll is how many people died in a certain event. For instance, the death toll for the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria was 173 because that many people died.
