The origin of the name Penguin dates back to the now extinct great auk of the North Atlantic. Pen Gwyn means "white head" in welsh where Celtic scholars ascribe the name to Welsh sailors, although the auk had only a white spot in front of each eye. Yet in latin "penguis" means "fat or good fed" where the Romans possibly gave the name for the auks which now is restricted exclusively to flightless aquatic white and black birds with an upright stance.
