Today's Mexico was in 1810 a part of the Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain, incorporating the nominally subject regions of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica), Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, several smaller island territories and much of what is now the southwestern United States (California, Nevada, Utah, Texas and parts of Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Wyoming), and with a combined population of around 11 million.

The territory which in 1821 became independent Mexico - i.e, excluding the island dependencies but including Central America (until 1823) and the areas lost or ceded to the US in 1836-54 - in 1810 contained somewhat over 7 million people.

The population in 1810 of the present-day republic of Mexico has been estimated at 5.6 million on the basis of the census conducted in the early 1790s, adjusted for omissions and intervening growth.

Its population was around 6 million; most of them concentrated in central and southern Mexico as well as on the Central American provinces.

By 1700 Mexico (or the New Spain, as it was known at the time, because it was an overseas colony of the Spanish Empire) was composed of present-day Mexico, most of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) as well as today's US States of California, Nevada, Utah, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and parts of Colorado and Wyoming.
