North Vietnam was a communist nation & South Vietnam was a free republic (the Republic of South Vietnam/RVN). When US replacement troops arrived in country aboard civilian chartered airliners (TWA, Flying Tiger, etc.) the airline Stewardess, after landing, would address her all male & jungle fatigued passengers with, "Good afternoon gentlemen, welcome to the Republic of South Vietnam, the time is 2:30...on behalf of the captain and crew we hope you enjoy your stay..."
Note: In 1969 most US Soldiers (different from USMC, USN, USAF, etc) were issued their jungle fatigues prior to arrival to or at the Oakland Army Depot, then transported to Travis AFB...from Travis (labeled the gateway to the Pacific) then on to their awaiting units in RVN.
