It was called the Orteig prize, named after French Hotel magnate. contrary to some ideas the Lindbergh Flight was NOT primarily anyhow- staged as a ( Newspaper circulation stunt) as were the James Gordon Bennett air shows, auto races, etc which were real enough but were sponsored by the Papers ( Bennett owned the NY World and managed it from Paris. he was not living a the time of l927 to my knowledge.There are people who believe the flight was both sponsored ( material,, fuel, etc) by the Newspapers, and awarded by the Newspapers also- and on those grounds could have been a hoax. again the books of history are open.
