Dog tags are used to identify people who have died or are injured in battle. They are in a set of two. One is put in the mouth of the dead solider and the other piece is taken away. The identity of fallen soldiers has always been a concern in wars. During the civil war the men would sew their names in their clothing so their body could be identified and the families notified of their death. Often after civil war battles so many men were dead that shallow graves were dug to try to keep down disease and to clean up the battlefield. Many men were never identified because of this.
