Roman society is the society of the city of Rome, which is the capital of Italy and the seat of the pope.
If you are referring to ancient Roman soicety, it was the society of the ancient Roman civilisation which lasted for about 1,200 years (753 BC-476 AD) and built the Roman Empire, which was the 15th largest empire in history
The top layer of Roman society was the patricians, who were the upper tier of the aristocracy. They were mainly owners of large landed estates and were often involved with politics and intellectual pursuits.
The equites (cavalrymen) were the lower tier of the aristocracy. Originally they were the men who served in the cavalry. By the Mid-republic, this status was extended to the rich plebeians who had gained access to the executive offices of state and the senate. These posts had been monopolised by the patricians. The rich plebeians fought to attain access to them and for power sharing. They were successful and were co-opted into a patrician-plebeian oligarchy. They were given equite status to retain the aristocratic character of the senate. These men were bankers, money lenders, merchants and investors in shipping and mining.
The plebeians were the artisans, labourers, market stall holders, pedlars and the masses of underemployed or unemployed people.
In other Roman cities, the most important social layer was the curiales. Originally, this tem referred to the leading members of the clans of the city of Rome. The towns which Rome founded around her empire were made to replicate the civic system of the mother town. The curiales became the leading members of the towns and were merchants, businessmen, and mid-level landowners who were expected to perform public duties. They served as local public officials. They could also become decurions, members of the local senate. They were the most powerful local political figures and the position conferred great prestige. They were responsible for public contracts, public works, temples, religious festivities, entertainment, ensuring order, and for local welfare systems. They were expected to pay large sums of their own money to fund these activities. Since this conferred prestige, they competed with each other to provide their towns with public facilities. During the period of rule by emperors, thy also supervised the collection of imperial taxes, provided food and board for the army, and supported the cursus publicus, the state-run courier and transportation service.
