Both acts were taxes passed by the British Parliament at the end of the Seven Years War (known as the French and Indian War in the United States). The Seven Years War was fought from 1756 to 1763 (though fighting in North America actually began in 1754). The war was fought between the two great colonial powers of Britain and France over control of North America. At the end of the War, Britain had emerged victorious but had nearly bankrupted itself in the process. In order to avoid an economic collapse, the British Parliament enacted a number of new taxes on commodities bought and sold in the American colonies.

Parliament passed the Sugar Act in 1764 and the Stamp Act In 1765 in order to raise revenue. The Sugar Act taxed molasses and sugar and the Stamp Act decreed that all legal documents had to be printed on pretaxed paper manufactured in England. Many in the American Colonies resented these acts, not only because they placed an economic burden on the colonies during an economic recession, but because the colonies had no direct representation in Parliament. These protests intensified and eventually led to to the American Revolution that officially began in 1775.

All of these acts were passed by the British Government to tax the American colonies.

These taxes started a series of events that led up to the Revolutionary War.
