You cannot really give a simple answer to that. Of course the northeners were outraged though. The northeners often thought that slavery was a horrible thing to do. It took away the africans rights as people. It made the northeners angry that people were being hurt, abused, and pretty much tortured every day, and that the slaves were pretty much given table scaps of food to live on. Such behavior was not acceptable to them and this controversy eventually led to the civil war.
The north was against slavery, and the south favored it.
The emancipation proclamation declared that all enslaved people will be freed and this ruined the chance of the South getting support from Europe. The emancipation proclamation also protected the rights of the slaves in the South and brought them to safety in the North. This changed the course of business in the South and North because every freed slave needed a job. Those jobs would have to come from the white men in the North. As well as this, the South's economy was based on slaves so needed to change to paid labor. Those who were previously slaves would have to be paid in order to work.
The Three-Fifths Compromise this compromise ment that for every 5 slaves 3 of them would be counted for taxation and representation.
The underground railroad began during the period when slavery in the south still existed. There were slaves that had escaped from the south to the north of the Mason-Dixon Line which was a safe place for them. These slaves and some sympathizers in the north were responsible for helping slaves escape from their masters in the south. The underground railroad was a network of homes or other structures where slaves could be held safely until they could move on to the next destination. The slaves were fed and cared for while staying in these "safe houses." A slave would travel through the network of safe houses until he or she reached the north where slavery was illegal and they could stay safely in the open.
"The three fifths compromise was a compromise between south and north. They were deciding on how much a slave should be worth. South didn't want it to count as any and north did. So the government decided to make them worth three-fifths." This answer is completely backwards. Abolitionists wanted slaves counted as zero for apportionment. No one ever said they were only 3/5 of a person. The South, not the North, wanted to count ALL their slaves because they would get a disproportionate amount of congressional representatives to their favor, which would allow slavery to continue unhindered. Another argument was to force the South to acknowledge slaves as people if they wanted them counted, so if they were people, how could they continue to own them as slaves?
Yes, if the slaves were freed in the south they would get paid when working in the North. They would just get paid less than the average white person.
no they werent because the north and a south had a gentlemans agreement that if the south used their slaves the fight would be unfair and the south would win
The north was against slavery, and the south favored it.
it was important because it would decide which states would belong to the "north" and the "south", which was important in deciding the fate of slaves. the north wanted slave free, while the south wanted slaves
It was about slaves. 3 out of 5 slaves were taxed (which was in the North's favor), So, the South would have to pay more taxes. For the South's benefit, three out of five slaves would be represented in congress, which means more seats for them.
Slaves in the North and parts of the South that had been captured by the Union were not freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and would have to wait until __________ to get freedom.
Well for one the south had slaves. The south grew cotton and tobacco which would die in the north. The North had more industrial buildings and more resources than the south.
Slaves fought for both sides, if they were free they would fight for the North to help free others. If they were slaves they would be forced to go to help the South win. The implementation of having slaves in the South become Confederate soldiers came very late in the war. It did not effect the outcome of the war at all.
Because the North did not have slaves and did not support slavery. Also, because the North was considered the Union in the Civil war, so if you did not want slaves or if you thought that the South should not secede then you would live in the North.
It meant that the slaves would be free and the southern people must have been broken-hearted knowing that all of their free labor would be lost.
The Three-Fifths Compromise was an agreement between the North and the South to only count the slaves as three-fifths of a person. The North was afraid the South would have greater representation in Congress.
The North supported abolition and tended to look down on slave holders. On the other hand, the South needed the slaves in order to maintain their high standards of living. Without slaves the large property owners in the South would begin to fail.
