Martin Luther was supposedly a priest and an Augustianian Friar. As such he had twice taken solemn vows of obedience both to his Order and to his Bishop. He flagrantly violated both of these and his solemn vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. On top of that he committed nearly every possible sin of heresy imaginable. The Church's reaction was at first to call its erring son to repent and to renounce his untenable positions. When Martin Luther threw it back in their faces, they had no choice but to excommunicate him in an effort to contain his madness and keep it from spreading. They were singularly unsuccessful as many rulers at the time, took his arguments to mean that they, too, could renounce the religion that God had ordained for them and make up their own. The Church's reaction was remarkably measured and sensible.
The Church at first reacted mildly, but later on acted drastically.

This led to a chain reaction of events that ultimately resulted in Luther's excommunication in 1521.

His followers. I have been raised Lutheran and I have learned that Martin Luther's original intentions were not at all to break with the Catholic church, he in fact encouraged his followers not to break from the church, he just wanted to change the corruptness of it and focus more on the Bible. The way I understand it to be is that Martin Luther's followers (not Martin Luther, it was after his death) broke from the Catholic church because they recognized the strength of the church itself and were insulted by the fact that the Catholic church excommunicated Luther.
