Enola Gay was the firt one, Bock's Car was he second one. There was some confusion over the names of the aircraft as one was renamed and one was mis-identified in the news. The Enola Gay is the B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped "Little Boy", on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. This aircraft was assigned to aircraft commander Captain Robert Lewis. However, Col. Paul Tibbets, Jr. was selected to fly the first mission. On 5 Aug 45, the atomic bomb was loaded in front bomb bay and Col. Tibbets had the name "Enola Gay" painted on nose in honor of his mother. http://www.enolagay.org/ "Bockscar" is the name of the US B-29 bomber that dropped the "Fat Man" bomb over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, the second atomic weapon used against Japan. The name "Bockscar" was the name of its aircraft commander, Captain Frederick C. Bock. For the mission, the pilot Major Charles W. Sweeney, commander of the 509th Composite Group's 393rd Bomber Squadron. He normally commanded the B-29 named "The Great Artiste". "Bockscar" was selected because it did not have the blast-measuring equipment installed in it but "The Great Artiste" did so it accompanied "Bockscar" on the mission. "Bockscar" had a problem with fuel and could not transfer fuel out of the 600-lb reserve tank. So, the aircraft were forced to land at Okinawa. The first news reports stated that the aircraft that dropped the 2nd atomic bomb was "The Great Artiste". Some sources say the aircraft did not have names painted on their nose at this time. "Bockscar" was placed on display at Davis-Monthan as the aircraft that bombed Nagasaki, but in the markings of "The Great Artiste". "Bockscar" was restored to correct markings is now on permanent display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force, Dayton, Ohio.

How did the Enola Gay get its name?

The Enola Gay was the name of the airplane that dropped the A-bomb on the Japanese mainland to end WW2AnswerCrews often nic named their planes, particularly the big bombers. Thus the Enola Gay. The bomb it carried was the first atomic weapon ever used in combat. It was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. The second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki by another crew/plane a few days later. Japan surrendered unconditionally (except for being assured by the USA that they could retain their royal family)quickly thereafter.AnswerEnola Gay was the name of the pilot's mother who dropped the bomb on the Japanese mainland during WWII.

Who thought of the idea to make a nuclear bomb?

H. G. Wells in his 1914 novel "The World Set Free" was the first to publish on the use of nuclear bombs in a war, he was the first to use the term atomic bomb to refer to bombs that obtain their energy from inside the atom (rather then from chemical reactions between atoms/molecules).Note: H. G. Wells atomic bombs were not based on using nuclear fission or nuclear fusion (as the real bombs are), as the nucleus of the atom had not yet been discovered and neither nuclear fission nor nuclear fusion had been discovered. As the only method of releasing the energy of the atom known at the time was radioactive decay, H. G. Wells based his atomic bombs (and atomic engines) on a hypothetical method of "accelerated radioactive decay".

Why did scientist debate on whether to use the atomic bomb on japan?

The bomb was new technology. It worked on a closed test range, but it was unknown how it would work dropped from a plane on an open city. It was also unknown exactly how destructive it was. The test was in a desert where there was nothing to destroy, but there would be an entire city at the real drop site. To add, nuclear science was still in its infancy and required caution.
