Jesus had no formal relationship with the Sanhedrin. To the Sanhedrin Jesus was a problem His popularity with people, His miracles and His claims to authority made the religious officials in Jerusalem nervous; Jesus' approach to Sabbath practice, healings, exorcisms, and sinners ended up challenging the existing religious structure of Judaism.

So members of the Sanhedrin plotted to get rid of Jesus.

In Acts 5:21, the Sanhedrin are described as "the full assembly of the elders of Israel". These people are the Pharisees, hypocritical lawmakers who love to pray in public and flaunt their "faith". Jesus rebukes them often, saying that without a heart devoted to Him to match their works, they will never enter heaven. You can only get to heaven by believing in Christ, not by doing good works. These people hate Jesus for this and call for His arrest, trial, and death.

Why was Jesus sent to death?

The short version: The scribes and Pharisees wanted him dead because they were loosing their power because of what Jesus had said against them. They took him to the Sanhedrin to try him for blasphemy, and found him guilty. Under Roman rule the Sanhedrin could not use capitol punishment, and so the Sanhedrin took him to Pilate. The Romans did not consider blasphemy a sin and would not have killed Jesus for it. The Sanhedrin knew this and changed their story claiming that Jesus was supporting anarchy and treason by claiming himself king of the jews, which the Romans would put someone to death for. Pilate was going to release Jesus, but was blackmailed into letting the mob have Jesus.
