Aurangzeb Alamgir was the third son of Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. In 1658, when Shah Jahan was seriously ill, Aurangzeb killed his brothers and imprisoned his father at Agra. Thus he ascended the throne of the Mughal Empire while his father was still alive. Shah Jahan died in confinement in the year 1666.
