The Spanish-American War of 1898 brought the Americans together (re-united them) from the effects of the US Civil War. Operation Desert Storm of January/February 1991 reunited the American people from the effects of the Vietnam War (per President George Bush Sr., "...we've beat the Vietnam syndrome!").
With Abraham Lincoln dead, and the North bent almost on revenge, the Southern States were in deep trouble. The Reconstruction policies, was handled very poorly. Since most of the South was ruined, it stayed ruined. Even by 1900, the South's economy was still below its production in 1861.
By the early 20th century, most of the US textile industries had moved to the south. North Carolina alone had 177 mills in 1900. Previous to this, most of the textile industries were located in the northeast.
Kores was a single country during World War II, and had been ruled by Japan as a colony since about 1900. It was Japan's defeat in 1945 and the end of its foreign power that created the vacuum that made civil war in Korea possible. This led to the creation of North and South Korea.
