The Emancipation Proclamation did not free any slaves.Abraham Lincoln basically said in the speech that only the slaves in the confederate states were free-- not the slaves in the Union. Lincoln knew that they would not obey this however.. But this changed the Union's reason for fighting. Now they were fighting a war for the abolishment of slavery, rather than to just keep the U.S. together. The Union gained more troops and support more than ever before, whereas the support and troops in the South had been slowly dwindling.
