The Confederate bombardment of the US Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina was an important event in the history of the US. The fort was forced to surrender and this led directly into the US Civil War. President Lincoln called for the enlistment of 75,000 volunteers for military duty for a period of three months. This resulted in the secession of four more Southern states. These were Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee. Tennessee seceded in June of 1861.
Ft. Sumter was fired upon on April 12, 1861, for 40 hours straight.
The first engagement of the War Between the States occurred at Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina, on 12 and 13 April 1861.
The three relief ships that could have resupplied Fort Sumter in April of 1861 were the USS Pawnee, the Baltic and the Harriet Lane. The Confederates believed that if they could resupply Fort Sumter, the continued occupation of the fort by the Union would be an insult. This became the primary motivation for the attack on the fort.
