The civil wars led the end of the Roman Republic and establishment of the rule by emperors. Historians refer to the latter political system as Roman Empire. However, understood in the usual sense of territorial expansion, the Republic already had an empire. Much of Rome's imperial expansion occurred during the Republic.
The wars were not between the wealthy and lower classes. They were a struggle for individual power between wealthy leaders. The resuly was the wealthy were defeated by the wealthy. The final battles were won by the wealthy Octavian Augustus over the wealthy Marc Anthony. The wealthy Augustus established a system of government which gave him the final word and control of the army to keep the wealthy senators from causing more revolution.
The Republic was destroyed by foreign invaders
The civil wars were not between the leaders of the wealthy and lower class. They were between military commanders who had the loyalty of their troops and used this loyalty to wage wars. There was a rift between the conservative Optmate faction, which favoured the interests of the aristocracy, and the Popularis faction which supported reforms aimed at helping the poor. This conflict eventually developed into fights between military leaders aligned with either faction. The result of the civil wars was the demise of the Republic and the beginning of personal rule by one man whom historians call the emperor, but the Romans called princeps.
The civil wars of the Roman Republic were between powerful men, not between the wealthy and the lower classes. There were many reasons for these civil wars. Among them was the conflict between optimates and populares. The former was a conservative political faction which supported the interests of the aristocracy. The latter was a political faction which championed the cause of the poor. However, the leaders of the pupulares were people from the higher layers of society, not poor people. As mentioned, this conflict was one among many reasons for the wars. Moreover, the wars were between armies recruited by the two opposing factions. Poor civilians were not involved in the wars. The outcome of the civil wars was the fall of the Roman Republic and the establishment of rule by emperors which was created by Octavian (who became known as Augustus when he became emperor) the man who won the Final War of the Roman Republic (32-30 BC)
