The Byzantines and Sassanians generally converted to Islam. In so doing, they provided a knowledge and expertise about how to run an empire (tax collection, bureaucracy, standing armies, property rights, etc.) that Muslims as a primarily nomadic people of a merchant class did not know.

This resulted in a well-organized and expansive Muslim-majority empire.
