In 1949 the original members were the USA, Canada, the UK, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy and Portugal. Germany was admitted in 1952, Turkey in 1955 and Spain in 1982. All other NATO member states joined after the end of the Cold War.

The U.S. is NATO. We spend more money on NATO than all the other countries combined. NATO was founded to counter the Warsaw Pact. That alliance was dissolved at the end of the cold war.
