Everyone, high and low born, was supposed to confess his sins and do penance as assigned for them. Penance might be very easy, such as an assignment to say a specific psalm or to recite the rosary a certain number of times. Or it could be very specific to the station of the person and the offence committed. The knights who murdered Thomas Becket were told to go on crusade for twelve years and then enter a monastery.

The idea of this was to complete the confession of sins, relieve the soul that had sinned from its guilt and suffering, and, if possible to undo damage or make up for it with good.
