No fruit ate Adam.
Opposition to God is Satan's main motive for tempting Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve were created by God. God intended for the couple to know good and live forever. So Satan was motivated to get Adam and Eve to know evil, disobey and disrespect their creator, and die.

all he asked adam not to do was eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. after eating the knowledge of good and evil fruit adam was banished from the garden along with eve who also ate the fruit.
Eve after eating the forbidden fruit convinced Adam to eat it and they would be like god.
By tempting Adam and Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit. By so doing they were cast out of the Garden of Eden and were subject to physical death and spiritual death (separation from the presence of God). Christ overcame both physical death (through the resurrection) and spiritual death (by taking our sins upon him, enabling us to repent and reenter the presence of God). Satan thought he was thwarting God's plan by tempting Adam and Eve, but this became a victory when Christ overcame both physical and spiritual death.
This first covenant was a conditional covenant. As such, it required obedience on Adam's part to enjoy the blessing. God gave Adam all the fruit and greens to eat, but Adam was prohibited from eating the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden. This was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned Adam that if he ate of the fruit of that tree he would die. We can assume from this warning that Adam was created to live forever. However, he did eat of this fruit and he did die, both spiritually and then physically.
