The greatest number of tornadoes recorded so far from a single hurricane is 117.
36 inches. (in the Appalachian Mountians) The above answer of 36 inches is incorrect. This total is nowhere near the biggest snowfall to occur in NC. The state record is 60 inches in a single snowfall, and this occured 2 times. Frpm April 2-6, 1987, 60 inches of snow fell on Newfound Gap in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and this total occured again between May 7-9, 1992 on Mt. Pisgah, on the Blue Ridge Parkway below Asheville. The 36 inch total in the above answer, is merely the greatest snow total in 24 hours, and occured on Mt. Mitchell. But single snowfall totals have exceeded 36 inches MANY times in the mountains. So, the above answer is somewhat misleading.
According to the U.S. National Climate Extremes Committee, the greatest 24-hr snowfall on record was 75.8 inches which fell at Silver Lake, Colorado on April 14-15, 1921. However, a possibly greater value has recently come to light in the archives of the NOAA National Climatic Data Center - an amazing 78.0 inches of snowfall recorded at Mile 47 Camp in Alaska on Feb. 9, 1963. The camp is located along Richardson Highway near the Gulf of Alaska and is part of the National Weather Service's Cooperative (CO-OP) Weather Observation network. There was an intense low over the Gulf of Alaska that day. A 77-inch 24-hr snowfall was reported at Montague, NY 11-12 January, 1997, but this total was ruled invalid by the National Climate Extremes Committee because the observer did not follow accepted observation protocol (measured too often, not giving time for air trapped in the snow on the snow board time to evacuate) and therefore the observation was artificially overstated by several inches. [see NWS, 1997: Evaluation of the Reported January 11-12, 1997, Montague, New York, 77-Inch, 24-Hour Lake-Effect Snowfall, GPO, 41 pp.] No greater observations for 24-hr snow fall are known to the NOAA National Climatic Data Center.
The greatest recorded single 24 hour snowfall took place in Alaska in 1963. On February 7 of that year, 78 inches fell in 24 hours at Mile 47 Camp.
