∙ 11y agoThe biggest computers ever built were the AN/FSQ-7 computers built by IBM in the late 1950s for the Air Force's SAGE air defense system. Only 52 of these machines were built, they occupied an entire floor of a large windowless concrete building. The last 2 of these computers were finally retired in the mid 1980s. They had roughly 50,000 vacuum tubes each. Any modern microprocessor could easily out perform them by many orders of magnitude. Even microprocessors available in the mid 1980s out performed them.
