During the Umayyad Period (711-1038), culture in the Muslim-Ruled part of Spain, called Al-Andalus, was at the greatest heights seen in the world up to that time. Philosophy and science in a number of major disciplines was either founded or expanded. However, when the Umayyad Dynasty ended in 1038, the Islamic Golden Age ended with it. While Muslims would rule part of Spain for over 450 more years, the culture dramatically lessened in the Muslim-controlled regions and, instead the Christian North became culturally ascendant.
