During the Umayyad Period (711-1038), culture in the Muslim-Ruled part of Spain, called Al-Andalus, was at the greatest heights seen in the world up to that time. Philosophy and science in a number of major disciplines was either founded or expanded. However, when the Umayyad Dynasty ended in 1038, the Islamic Golden Age ended with it. While Muslims would rule part of Spain for over 450 more years, the culture dramatically lessened in the Muslim-controlled regions and, instead the Christian North became culturally ascendant.

Why was the golden age of Al-Andalus a golden age for Jews?

Al-Andalus also known as Muslim Spain or Islamic Iberia, was a medieval Muslim territory occupying at its peak most of what are today Spain and Portugal. The non-Muslims were given the status of ahl al-dhimma (the people under protection). Those who were neither Christians nor Jews, such as pagans, were given the status of Majus. Jews constituted more than five percent of the population. Al-Andalus was a key centre of Jewish life during the early Middle Ages, producing important scholars and one of the most stable and wealthy Jewish communities.
