In the United States, the temperance movement effectively ended when the 18th Amendment was ratified, which was followed by passage of the Volstead Act. These events took place in 1919, on January 16 and October 28 respectively, and the law banning distribution of alcohol went into effect on January 17, 1920.

Prohibition, in the United States, was an utter failure, and was ended with a repeal of the Volstead Act on December 5, 1933.

Around 1800, temperance organizations were founded in Connecticut, Virginia and New York State. At first, they advocated "temperance", or moderation. As the decades passed the organizations spread and many churches joined in calling for outright abolition of liquor sales. After many ups and downs, and with much political infighting, their crowning achievement occurred with Prohibition in 1920, in the form of the Volstead Act passed by congress. So the the movement existed as an influential force in American politics, laws and morals for more than a century from around 1800 through to the 1920's.
