It depends on the context. If it is part of a proper noun like "Battle of Gettysburg," it is capitalized. If it is used as a common noun, like "They had a battle," it is not capitalized.
The Battle of Gettysburg, I just read it in my history book.
Gettysburg is and was a town which, like all towns, had a cemetery. There is also a Gettysburg National Cemetery located on Cemetery Hill in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. David Wills, a local attorney was responsible for acquiring the land for this after the Civil War battle there.
Whether Gettysburg was little would depend on your definition of the word. It was not tiny, neither was it even a small city. It was, and is, the county seat of Adams County, Pennsylvania, so the County Courthouse is there. There is a Lutheran Theological Seminary and also Gettysburg College, both of which were there during the battle. Even today though Gettysburg has only about 7500 citizens. There was a railroad finished just before the war linking Gettysburg and Hanover. Gettysburg's main importance at the time of the battle though was as a road hub - there were nine good roads radiating from Gettysburg like spokes on a wheel. There was a shoe factory in Gettysburg and the battle began when some Confederates went there to seize the shoes, not knowing they had already been taken a week before by a different party of the numerous throngs of soldiers beginning to crowd into the area. Gettysburg was big enough to have a grid of streets and had somewhere above two thousand residents when the battle erupted in their town.

The Battle of Glorieta Pass is called the Gettysburg of the West due to its significance and impact on the American Civil War. Like Gettysburg, it was a decisive battle that halted Confederate advances into Union territory. It marked a turning point in the war in the West and ensured Union control of the New Mexico Territory.

On July 1st , thanks to the temporary superiority in numbers the Confederates succeeded in seizing some important positions like, Seminary Ridge, Oak Hill and the town of Gettysburg, beating back the first Union units, which had arrived on the battlefield.
They all got drunk and danced about like panzies.
Sounds like Gettysburg - officially counted as a three-day battle.
