Before the constitution there was NO president. The office of the president was created in the constitution. When Washington took the office the term was unlimited, but he served only two terms. He felt that a man should serve the people for a short time and then go home. This policy was kept by the men who followed him into the office until FDR. Roosevelt served 3 terms and the result was the 22 amendment limiting the terms of the president to two 4 year terms for a total of 8 years.
A President's term is 4 years. According to the Constitution, the president can run for a maximum of two terms.
The Framers of the Constitution considered a six or seven-year term for the president before deciding on a four-year term with the option of reelection. Although the Constitution did not place a limit on the number of times a president can be reelected, President George Washington established the precedent of not seeking a third term.
In most countries that have a president, the length of term is specified in a written document, such as a constitution.
The term limits for the president were put in place by an amendment to the Constitution. The president can only be elected as president two times and if he served for more than half of a term to which he was not elected, he can only be elected for one term.
The Vice President automatically becomes the president. There is a process, in one of the recent amendments to the Constitution, for the appointment of a new Vice President. They serve the remainder of the original president's term. The Constitution was thus amended after the death of Kennedy (1963) and before the resignation of Nixon (1972).
According to Mexico's constitution, a Mexican President's term is 6 years long; they are ineligible for another consecutive term.
The US Constitution, assuming you're talking about the US President. If you're talking about some other president, presumably the constitution of that body would do so.
