John Tyler (March 29, 1790 – January 18, 1862) was the tenth President of the United States.
The slogan “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too.†was used when he ran as the vice presidential candidate with Harrison. Harrison had been nicknamed Tippecanoe after a battle with native Americans.
On April 4, 1841, President Harrison died just 30 days after taking the office. What happened next was a constitutional crisis since there was nothing in the constitution about what would happen next.
He took power using the “Tyler Precedent†that made it clear that a Vice President assuming office had the full powers and title of the President. This gave him a new popular nickname, “His Accidency.â€
This was used until the 25th Amendment made the practice officially part of the Constitution.
