All the Muslims agreed that it was not necessary to be the direct descendant of the Prophet (SAW) to qualify as the leader of the Muslims. The Prophet (SAW) had no son. The Muslims agreed on the Caliphate of Hazrat Abu Bakr (RAU), Hazrat Umar (RAU) and then Hazrat Usman (RAU). It was long after the death of the Prophet (SAW) that this idea was planted and their arose a split among the Muslims.

Sunnis argue that a Muslim has the right to be a Leader of Islam if that person demonstrates a good capability of leadership. Ibadis argue that a Muslim has a right to be a Leader of Islam if he has abstained from sin and remains pure. Ahmadis agree with the Sunni position.
It is exclusively the Shiites who argue that only Muhammad's descendants can be the Leaders of Islam.
