The virus in penumbra was the tuurngait. This is referred to as a mythological being, but manifests itself as a virus which has notably affected the dogs and humans, causing them to act like Zombies. The tuurngait virus also changes perceptions of reality, causing auditory and visual hallucinations. It also provides telekinetic abilities with other tuurngait-infected. This is why tuurngait is both refered to as a virus and a different plane of existence.
