when the U.S. win the spanish American can war, Spain gave Puerto Rico as a "dont hurt us gift" Puerto Rico is a commonwealth to the U.S. we offered to add them to a 51st state.the U.S. would want to control Puerto Rico for its own purposes
In winning the Spanish-American war, in 1898, America gained temporary control of Cuba and indefinite colonial authority of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines from the Spanish. In 1946 the Philippines gained independence from the U.S, but Guam and Puerto Rico are still today U.S territories. They also got a neverending headache because of Cuba.
A B and C Spain gave us Puerto Rico, Guam and we bought the Philippines. ......god i hate a plus ;)
The 1898 Treaty of Paris.
Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.
Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines
It gave the U.S. the islands of Guam and the Philippines in the Pacific, and Puerto Rico in the Caribbean.
When America defeated the declining Spanish Empire in the Spanish-American War, we took over control of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippine islands. We quickly gave Cuba autonomy, and the Philippines were slowly granted independence as well. The US has retained possession of Puerto Rico and Guam.
The primary ones were Cuba and the Philippines. Guam and Puerto Rico were also involved. Spain gave up control of Cuba as a result. Spain sold all rights to the other three for $20 million dollars.
It gave us Cuba (which meant we could have a stronger trade) and the Phillipines (we had actually double-crossed them by promising them independence but then imperializing them ourselves). It also gave us Guam, Puerto Rico, Guantanamo Bay (Cuba), and the Platt Amendment.
P.R. was the Foraker Act. Guam was the Treaty Of Paris.
