Nationalism is the realization that various groups of people have unique customs and traditions that did not match those of the wider populace or imperial government. Nationalism provided a metric by which people could establish a concept of coherent local identity, on the basis of ethnicity, ideology, religion, and particularized customs and rituals. Nationalism was this articulation of what their cultural views were, how they defined themselves, and their historical narratives.
