According to Science there was nothing. But `nothing doesnt mean nothing. In cosmology nothing means layers of energy lined up to form a vaccume. sometimes energy can create a small explosion. If hundreds of these explosions occur at the same time then that would have created the big bang.
Before the Big Bang, there were no such things as 'there' and 'before'. I know it sounds
crazy and slightly facetious, but the Big Bang is regarded as the point in space and time
where/when space and time came into existence.

Philosophy and religion say... well, just about any thing you like, almost all mutually contradictory. Choose your preferred one, and ask a priest (I'd say "or philosopher", but any philosopher who gets dogmatic about what was before the universe might as well be called a priest).
