For a time in the early discovery years of exploration, then settlement in the New World, the slave trade from Black Africa began and increased as the demand for "low cost" labor expanded due to the expansion of plantations, especially in the Southern part of the 13 Colonies and the United States. The term "low cost" is used in that the slaves had to be purchased then fed & clothed in order to work the fields. Still, using slave labor was less expensive then paying free workers.
