Veteran's Day was originally called "Armistice Day." It commemorated the soldiers lost in World War I. It was first observed on November 11, 1919, at the behest of President Woodrow Wilson, and again seven years later in 1926. In 1938, Congress made it a legal holiday "dedicated to world peace."
After World War II, suggestions were made to enlarge its scope to include all veterans of the US armed forces. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the law establishing this, and Congress renamed the holiday as Veteran's Day.
