Martha Washington was the first "first lady"-- even though that terminology was not in common use back then. But as the wife of President George Washington, she became a role model for women of her era, advocating for volunteerism and expressing her patriotic love of the newly created United States. Before the revolution was won, when the colonists were fighting against the British, she and many of her women friends sewed and hand-made the uniforms for the troops, as well as doing mending and cooking for those working in the war effort.
