Both sides had and used pistols, shot guns, cannons, and swords.
More specifically: the common infantry weapon was the muzzleloading percussion cap rifle firing a conical, hollow based minié ball, deadly up to a mile and a socket bayonet. Officers also had percussion cap revolvers of various makes, mostly Colt and Remington, as well as some minor manufacturers; they also carried swords or sabers. Cavalry troopers also carried these, but instead of the rifle, preferred the breach-loading Sharps carbine. The main artillery weapon was the muzzleloading, rifled field piece, but mortars were also used for sieges. Toward the end of the war, breach-loading repeating rifles such as the seven-shot Spencer, and the Henry which used a modern cartridge where the minié ball slug was joined to the percussion cap by a casing holding the powder, but these were delivered in relatively small numbers. Some of the muzzleloading Springfields were converted to breachloaders as well.
It was the Anaconda Plan.

The similarities between north and the civil war are...... Both sides were American. Both sides spoke English. Both sides raised regional units. Both sides had the same weapons. Both sides had poor medical care. Both sides wanted to expand
The true potential of the rifles available during the Civil War was not used because Generals on both sides insisted on using old tactics, without tacking the ability of their weapons into account.
