The standard infantry weapon was the mauser 98k, rifle. This rifle bore the brunt of the close combat, bayonet or buttstock, from Africa to the Eastern Front. The Germans had close quarters battle training just like their allied counterparts. Most infantry soldiers who were lucky enough to find a handgun(thru private purchase, trading, or picking up on the battlefield)also used these. For the Germans this meant mostly the Walther P-38 or the occasional Luger. When Germany overran Belgium,France, Czeckoslavakia, or other countries they pressed these foreign weapons into service. One of the most common pistols was the Belgium Hi-Power 9mm pistol. This weapon had the distinction of serving in large quantities in the German Army as well as in Numerous Allied Forces. The Germans also issued numerous fighting knives to their frontline troops that tucked into the top of the boot, the belt, or into the tunic. Bayonets were the most common fighting knife the average German soldier would have at his disposal. German WW-1 veterans quickly versed the WW2 recruits on the effieciency of the Shovel or entrenching tool in Close Combat. Grenades were also a common close combat weapon. When enemy armoured vehicles were close and attacking, the German soldier would have to get close and attack the vehicle with either mines or molotav cocktails, when no panzerfaust or heavy anti tank support was available. The Germans also employed numeorus anti personnel and anti tank mines that were very difficult to detect w/ ww2 technology mine detecters. The German soldier was not shy about pressing foreign weapons into service when needed. Numerous pictures exist of German soldiers using Soviet PSSH Submachineguns, Belgium Hipowers, Captured British Bren Guns, or any other effective weapon available.

∙ 13y agoThe standard service rifle is the G36, which replaced the older G3 rifle. The MG4 provides squad level fire support, and the MG3 variation of the WWII-era MG42 machine gun is still in use.
