Ferrets tolerate cool climates well and are most comfortable at temperatures around 60 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Ferrets should always housed indoors in a temperature controlled environment.

Cold Weather

* They can handle going outdoors in cold weather, unless it's really frigid (below freezing) or windy, wet weather. How long a ferret can stay outside depends, such as age, health and weather. A Young ferret will probably want to stay outside longer than an older ferret. Ferrets with health problems should only stay outside for a few minutes. A ferret can play outside for about 30 to 60 minutes. An older ferret, or one in poor health, should stay no more than 5 to 10 minutes outside at a time. Hot Weather

* Ferrets cannot handle high temperatures well at all and are extremely susceptible to heatstroke. They have poorly developed sweat glands. Generally, when temperatures exceed 80˚f (26˚c),or less in humid weather, one should be aware of possible heatstroke.

Ferrets do not adapt to warm temperatures well. In temperatures above 80-85 degrees, they can suffer from heat stroke. Therefore, if you have a ferret and are unable to provide cooling methods (fans, air conditioners, etc.) they will end up very ill and/or dead. They adapt to cold much better.

Climate or temperature for a ferretFerrets tolerate cool climates well and they need to be kept in a climate or temperature controlled environment and are most comfortable at temperatures around 60 - 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ferrets have poorly developed sweat glands and cannot tolerate temperature above 80 - 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and humid weather can also be a problem.

In Europe and the U K, where the weather is mild, some ferrets are kept outside in courts (similar to dog kennels)

Can a ferret live outside?Ferrets are usually kept indoors in a temperature controlled environment, and can only be housed outdoors in an an area where it NEVER gets above 80Ëšf / 26Ëšc, and then only if they remain out of direct sunlight. Ferrets cannot handle high temperatures and humidity well at all and are extremely susceptible to heatstroke. Generally, when temperatures exceed 80Ëšf (26Ëšc), a ferret will begin to suffer the effects of overheating and possible heatstroke.

Ferrets that have become acclimated to gradually increasing temperatures over time will do better than a ferret that has lived its life in an air conditioned home and then is suddenly exposed to 80Ëš+ temperatures.

Winter - Ferrets cannot live outdoors in the cold. They can handle going outdoors in cold weather, unless it's really frigid (below freezing) or windy, wet weather.

Cold climate is misleading. Too cold and your ferret will suffer trying to stay warm, even with fuzzy blankets. They need at least a moderate climate. It is true, they are very prone to heatstroke, so if they are in your house or apartment, then never let the temp run above 80 F. Heatstroke is serious to the little animals. Ferrets internal temp runs higher than humans, about 105 F, and drinking water, bathing water should be slightly warm, not cold.
