I can only speak for a YFZ450 04-05, the engines are the same. There is no gear oil in a YFZ450. Weird I know. The engine oil tank right in front is black usually has a gray cap. That tank supplies the gears as well as the engine. If you follow the silver pick up line on top of the black oil tank it goes to the left side of the bike where the gear shift lever is. To change the oil you will want to remove the bolt on the bottom side of the black oil tank, then remove the bolt right under the gear shift lever this will drain the oil in the gear case. The bolt is the only 12mm bolt on that side. Many people miss this step and will over fill or under fill the oil tank which will cause a knocking sound in most cases. Once you have removed both bolts lean the bike to the left. (if you are sitting on the bike it would be your left). Then remove the oil filter this is on the right side of the bike. Never place a dry new oil filter in the bike, take some oil and wet the new oil filter as well as the rubber seals, place new filter in and bolt on the cover. Now that the oil is drained screw the bolts back in. One in the oil tank and one in the case right under the gear shift lever. Remove the black cap on the case its a thumb screw type. It looks just like the gray one that goes on the oil tank. At this point you should have your new oil filter in and both screws back in the bike one in the bottom of the oil tank and one in the case right under the gear shift lever. The bike will take 2 liters of oil. I use maxima racing oil synblend 4 high performance 4 cycle oil sae10w40, its a 50/50 syn blend. I pour 1 liter into the black oil tank in the front and 1/2 of the second liter into the gear case. You will now have 1/2 a liter left. Start the bike let it run for a minute. Check the oil level on the black oil tank the gray cap acts as a dip stick. If low add oil. Now pour the rest of the oil into the gear case. Place caps on the oil tank fill hole and the gear fill hole. Your bike should have 2 liters of oil in it. Your gear oil and bike oil change is done. Start the bike let it run, drive it slow so all the seals and oil filter setup.
Good luck I hope this helps.

for starts its not oil. its more like hydraulic fluid. and your owners manual should tell you what weight gear oil to use.
manual transmissions take 90 weight gear grease / oil
