That depends on the actual condition of the engine and where you live. If it has little to no wear and still has high compression, the manufacturer's recommendation is probably still best. A lighter weight 5W30 would provide less friction and probably higher gas mileage. If the car is starting to show some signs of wear, like low compression, then a slightly higher weight 20W40 or 20 W50 for summer use, but still a lighter weight in winter. Some manufacturers now recommend synthetic oil, mostly for the lower friction and possibly less wear in the engine, so that is another consideration.
