A good way to get an impression of the life, beliefs etc of ancient Greeks is to read Phaedo and the Republic from Plato and Homer's epics Iliad and Odyssey. There are many great translations you can choose from. Also, ancient greek (theatrical) plays from Aristophanes and the 3 greats of tragedy (Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides).
