Anderson shelters were small air raid shelters sold to people in Britain very cheaply to assemble in their backyard. They were basically 6-8 pieces of corrugated steel sheet that made a small hut when assembled. They were supposed to dig a small hole for the floor area and then build the shelter in it and cover it with earth from the hole. They held about 6 people sitting on benches either side.
An Anderson shelter was made from metal and made by John Anderson
anderson sheltors are made of curved steel panels which are joined in the middle to make the roof and the side walls of the shelter. The steel panels have ridges and grooves (they are 'corrugated'), which makes the metal stronger.

Andersen Shelters were kit buildings assembled as bomb shelters in England during World War 2. They were officially designed for the government and sanctioned by the government. People who could not make it to bomb shelters had them put up at their homes.
See the link below to see what they looked like. There were also Morrison Shelters but they were for use inside buildings.
Anderson shelters were put up because of all the bombs droped down on all the cities, the air raid siren woul go off and people would run into shelter. Anderson shelters were put in the gardens of peoples houses, people would put soil and plants on top of them to disguise them so the germans could not see them. An Anderson shelter would only hold about one family in. It would have about two beds in some kids teddies and books incase they had stay in there overnight. For those who did not have gardens Morrison shelters were put in the corner of a room in people's houses. They were made of pure steel and were only small, they were flat so peeople could not stand up they had to lie down. They could only fit one person in and no stuff apart from a blanket on the bottom of the cage (shelter).
For protection in case our country was attacked by another country during war.
